The Almanac of Collapsing Records
The upper terraces of the great stepped stone monument on the Kedu Plain, central Java
c. 825 — a monsoon-washed morning on the Kedu Plain of central Java, a hill sheathed over decades in nearly two million blocks of river andesite, the topmost stone being set while the volcanoes stand in cloud on every side
Decades of lifting, and then nothing left to lift. This breach reads the LABORER IN THE SHADE on the Kedu Plain: a hill wrapped in nearly two million fitted stones, terrace on terrace of carved pilgrims climbing into cloud, and one final block swung down onto its bed while the men who carried it sit back on their heels and watch. The witness is read only at the resting and the watching: the years of hauling, the split hands, the men who did not live to see the top, all held softly in the background and never staged. The fragment is the subject's own: the strange flat quiet of finishing a thing that took most of a life, the hands with nothing left to do — and the memory beneath it of a long labor of their own that ended, the day the work was done and they did not know what to feel.
