The News Comes Down the Mountain — Everest, 1953

Advance base camp on the Khumbu Glacier, high on the flank of Everest

May 29, 1953 — the great push for the summit of the world underway, a chain of camps strung up the ice, porters and climbers waiting below the col for word to come down

Two specks coming down out of the last of the world. This breach reads the PORTER AT ADVANCE CAMP on Everest: a strung line of tents on the glacier, the thin air, the long wait with eyes fixed on the upper slope — and then two exhausted figures descending, and the whole camp reading their walk before a single word is said. The witness is placed only among the porters at the tents: the danger of the mountain and the cost of the climb held softly in the background, never dramatized, the moment itself all watching and release. The fragment is the subject's own: the long wait ended, the news you were among the first below to know — and the memory beneath it of a time you stood watching a road or a doorway for someone to come back, and the moment they finally did.

on the morning of May 29, 1953, two climbers of the British expedition reached the summit of Everest, the first to stand on the highest point on earth
the expedition was strung up the mountain in a chain of camps, with a large team of Sherpas and porters carrying loads between them
the summit pair had been roped together on the climb and descended the same way, back down toward the high camps
the news reached the world only days later, timed to arrive as coronation crowds gathered in London
the whole enterprise depended on the porters and Sherpas hauling supplies up the ice and waiting below for word to come down
