The Almanac of Collapsing Records
The flat roof of a teaching house in Alexandria, above the colonnaded street, on a clear night in the teaching season
a clear night about the year 400 — Alexandria still the school of the Mediterranean, its harbor lamps burning below, students gathered on a flat roof around a disc of brass while the sky turns overhead
The sky was made readable, and a servant with an unlit lamp saw it happen. This breach reads the SERVANT ON THE ROOF in Alexandria: a teaching night, students crowded around a brass disc engraved with the fixed stars, a teacher sighting along a bar until a star's height becomes a number that anyone standing there could say out loud. The witness is read only at the edge of the circle — the lamps untended, the sea below, the class gasping — the teacher held at documented distance in the middle of her students, never approached, never named. The fragment is the subject's own: the moment a shut door opened a crack and something meant for other people turned out to be sayable by you — and the memory beneath it of the first time someone explained a thing you had been told you would not understand.
