The Knot-Keeper's Reckoning — Cusco, c. 1500

An empire held in a bundle of string. This breach reads the PORTER IN THE FORECOURT at Cusco: the harvest counted in, the hillside granaries sealed, and a khipukamayuq running coloured cords through his fingers, reading out the stored totals of an entire province from knots you cannot see the sense of. An official disputes a figure; the knot-keeper finds the strand, counts it down, and is right, and nobody argues twice. The witness is read only at the waiting and the watching — the long carry up the road and the ache of the load held softly in the background, never staged. The fragment is the subject's own: standing outside a skill you do not have and feeling it hold the world steady anyway — and the memory beneath it of a time someone knew a thing you could not do and you trusted them with it.

Inca administration recorded accounts on khipu — bundles of knotted, coloured, spun cords hanging from a main cord — and these records were read and kept by specialists called khipukamayuq
knot position along a cord and knot type encoded decimal values, so a single strand could carry a full figure; colour and cord placement carried the category
state storehouses, qollqa, were built in rows on cool hillsides above settlements and filled after harvest with maize, freeze-dried potatoes, cloth and other goods
labour owed to the state was performed as mit'a service, including the carrying of goods along the road system to storehouse and administrative sites
khipukamayuq were held answerable for the accuracy of the records they kept, and totals read from cords were used to settle disputes over stored amounts
Cusco was the administrative centre from which the four provinces of the empire were governed, and provincial accounts were brought there
