The Serum Run to Nome — Nome, Alaska, 1925

The edge of Front Street in Nome, Alaska, in the dark before dawn, waiting for the last dog team out of the storm

February 2, 1925 — a diphtheria outbreak in an ice-bound town of the far north, the only cure six hundred miles away, relayed by dog teams across the frozen interior through blizzard and killing cold, the last driver due into Front Street before dawn

A cure came the only way it could: pulled through the dark on runners. This breach reads the TOWNSPERSON AT FRONT STREET in ice-bound Nome: a town cut off by winter with a killing sickness in its children, and a package of antitoxin relayed six hundred miles by dog teams through blizzard and cold no thermometer could hold. The witness is read only at the street's edge in the dark, listening for runners on the snow — the sickness and the shuttered houses held softly in the background, never staged, the moment itself all held breath. The fragment is the subject's own: the thing that came through against everything, the strangers who carried it, the relief that broke over a waiting street — and the memory beneath it of a time help arrived from far off when you had stopped being sure it would, a rescue you never earned and never forgot.
