The Clay Army Under the Field — Lintong, 1974

A dry field east of Mount Li, near Xiyang village outside Lintong, Shaanxi province, where farmers are digging a well through the drought-hard ground

the spring of 1974 — a fourth year of drought in the Shaanxi countryside, a work team of farmers sinking a well by hand through the red earth of a persimmon orchard, the pomegranate trees just budding, no notion of what waits two thousand years down

A face comes up out of the ground where you were only digging for water. This breach reads the FARMER AT THE WELL PIT in drought-cracked Lintong: a work team sinking a hole through hard red earth, hoping to reach water in a fourth dry year — and instead the wall of the pit gives up a curve of terracotta, a shoulder, a head, a man made of clay standing patient two thousand years down. The witness is read only at the pit edge and the lifting-out: the ache of the labor and the dust of the drought held softly behind, the moment itself all wonder at what the field had held. The fragment is the subject's own: the astonishment of finding something whole and waiting exactly where you never thought to look, buried right under the ordinary ground you walked every day — and the memory beneath it of a time something you had passed a thousand times turned out to hold far more than you knew.

in the spring of 1974, during a drought, farmers of a work team near Xiyang village east of Lintong were digging a well in a field at the foot of Mount Li
as they dug down through the earth they struck hard fragments of fired clay, and then pieces of life-sized human figures made of terracotta
the figures had lain buried since the third century BC, part of the tomb complex of the first Qin emperor, whose burial mound stood nearby
the site was found to hold thousands of individually modeled clay soldiers, arranged in ranks in underground pits
the farmers had set out only to reach water in a dry year, and instead uncovered one of the largest buried figures ever found
