The First Echo — Cheshire, 1957

October 1957 — a newly finished steel dish two hundred and fifty feet across standing in a wet Cheshire field, the Soviet Union's first satellite four days into orbit, and a night shift bent over a chart recorder waiting for the carrier rocket to come round again

For the first time, a thing made by human hands answered from above the sky. This breach reads the STUDENT IN THE CONTROL ROOM at Jodrell Bank: a telescope finished weeks earlier and already deep in debt, a night shift, and a paper roll on which an ink pen scratches a flat line until it does not. The witness is read only at the desk and the trace: the politics and the money and the cold war behind it held in the background, never argued, the moment itself the plain shock of an echo coming back. The fragment is the subject's own: the night they were in the room when a small marked line changed the size of the world — and the memory beneath it of a time they were present, unimportant and unnoticed, for something that turned out to matter more than anyone in the room could yet say.

the Mark I radio telescope at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire, a steel dish two hundred and fifty feet across, was completed in 1957 and was at the time the largest steerable radio telescope in the world
the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 on 4 October 1957; its radio beacon could be picked up by ordinary receivers, but the spent carrier rocket in orbit with it was silent
on the night of 12 October 1957 the telescope was used as a radar and detected an echo from the Sputnik carrier rocket — the first radar detection of an object in orbit
the telescope's project was heavily over budget and its director was under public and official pressure over the cost when the detection was made
results at the telescope were recorded as an ink trace on a moving paper roll from a chart recorder, and the dish was swung on rails by electric drive motors
