Seventy-Two Days — Jersey City, 1890

January 25, 1890 — a winter Saturday afternoon on the Jersey side of the Hudson, a special train running east from Chicago, cannon waiting at Fort Greene and on the Jersey shore, a crowd packed onto the platform to see a newspaper reporter finish a trip around the world

A woman came back from the whole world with one bag and beat a book. This breach reads the TRAVELER ON THE PLATFORM at Jersey City: an ordinary passenger with a ticket and a wait, folded into a crowd that has been tracking a stranger's progress in the papers since November, watching the special train roll in under the shed and the cannon answer from the shore. The record's celebrity is held at documented distance — a figure stepping down from a car, seen over hats and shoulders, never met, never spoken to. What is held in the background is the wager itself, the dare that a woman couldn't do it alone. The fragment is the subject's own: the day someone they had counted out came back proving otherwise — and the memory beneath it of a person in their life who was told what they could not do and went and did it anyway.

Nellie Bly left Hoboken on 14 November 1889 aboard the Augusta Victoria to attempt a trip around the world faster than the eighty days of Jules Verne's novel
she travelled with a single small gripsack and the dress she wore, having been told a woman would need too much luggage to make the attempt
her newspaper ran a contest inviting readers to guess her finishing time, and the arriving days were reported and counted across the country
a special train carried her east from the Pacific coast, and she reached the Pennsylvania Railroad terminal at Jersey City on 25 January 1890
cannon were fired at Fort Greene and on the Jersey shore to mark the arrival, and a crowd filled the platform to meet the train
the elapsed time of the journey was seventy-two days, six hours, eleven minutes and fourteen seconds
