Carter widens the hole and holds the candle through it before any eye, testing for foul air
beyond the door: gilded couches shaped as animals, a throne, dismantled chariots, the glint of gold on everything
two life-sized black statues of the king stand facing each other, guarding a second sealed door
the necropolis seal stamped across the plaster shows the jackal Anubis above nine bound captives
